Debugging Tools For Developers: What to Look For

Claire WilliamsArticle by Claire Williams

An air accident investigation starts with the flight recorder, because the recordings decide how many questions survive the crash. A debugger is the same class of instrument. The tool examines the runtime logs, and the format of those logs fixes the ceiling on what you can prove about the fault.

Choosing debugging tools for developers is a sequence of gates, and the sections below arrive in the order the questions arrive: before installation, at installation, at the first defect, when the first strategy fails, when the defect is in production, and at the ninety-day review. Each item names a property of your own toolchain, and the answer determines what you buy, install and attach.

Before Installation

Your debugger names the debug information format it consumes. DWARF 5, PDB, Source Map v3 and the JVM LineNumberTable are not interchangeable, and a tool that will not name its format will not map an instruction address back to a source line. The compiler flag that emits the format is set for every configuration you intend to inspect, and the shipping configuration is one of them. A release binary built without line tables gives you a stack of addresses and no other information.

gcc -g -gdwarf-5 -O1 -fno-omit-frame-pointer -o app app.c

The tool documents its host and target architectures. The Debugging Tools for Windows documentation on Microsoft Learn says that the Windows debuggers run on x86, x64 and Arm processors and debug code on those same architectures, and that Microsoft provides them in three ways: inside the Windows Driver Kit, inside the Windows Software Development Kit, or as a standalone install made by starting the SDK wizard and deselecting every feature except Debugging Tools for Windows.

Debugger and target sit on one machine or on two. Microsoft Learn calls the machine running the debugger the host and the machine being debugged the target, and requires a supported version of Windows on both. A fault that reproduces only on a staging host turns remote attach from a convenience into a purchase requirement.

The symbol path resolves to a store you control. That path is configuration, and it belongs in the image recipe, where every build picks it up:

_NT_SYMBOL_PATH=srv*C:\symbols*https://msdl.microsoft.com/download/symbols

The licence answers four questions before you install: what leaves the machine during a session, how long the vendor keeps it, whether the tool sends source text to a hosted model, and what happens to the seat count when the team doubles. A debugger attached to a running process is a data channel, and the contract governs it.

Two further checks decide what you can do later. Chrome DevTools is included in the browser, and the Chrome DevTools documentation describes the MCP server that connects its inspection, network analysis and trace logs to coding agents including Claude Code and Copilot, so a browser-side debugger is now also an agent interface. The debugger also tracks execution: Upsun's guide to debugging techniques names rr and UDB as time-travel debuggers that step forward and backward through a run, which matters in multi-threaded Java workloads where the fault is an ordering that a single forward pass never repeats.

At Installation

The default configuration captures something. A tool whose logging is off until a developer turns it on saves no data about the failure that happens at three in the morning.

The log destination survives the process that creates the entries. The container filesystem does not.

Retention is configured in days and someone owns the number. A retention policy that has not been configured is a retention policy set by disk pressure.

The installation includes the preemptive half. TestMu AI's debugging guide distinguishes reactive debugging, which starts after the bug has been found, from preemptive debugging, which adds logging in place beforehand so the bug never has to be reproduced on your machine. The second half is the one that pays during an incident.

A tool should serve at least one of the six steps in the debugging process, and you should know which. IBM's overview of debugging identifies the steps as reproducing the conditions, finding the bug, determining the root cause, fixing the bug, testing to validate the fix, and documenting the process.

The WordPress plugin Developer Debug Tools shows the shape of a full installation-time capture in a hosted application. The plugin page shows a dashboard of server metrics, a log viewer for debug.log and custom logs, editors for wp-config.php and .htaccess with a lint check, viewers for options, transients, cookies and REST API status, and automatic backups of any config file it saves, named with the date and time of the change such as wp-config-2022-08-22-15-25-46.php. The same page warns that these editors change core files and asks for a site backup first. Read that as the general rule: a tool that can write to configuration needs a reversible write and a timestamp.

At The First Defect

The failure happens on demand, twice, with the same input. IBM prioritises reproduction, and Upsun's guide to debugging techniques also opens its sequence with reproducing the issue. A defect you cannot trigger is a defect you can only describe.

You have written a hypothesis before you have written a breakpoint. The study of how developers choose debugging strategies surveyed 35 developers and interviewed 16 experienced ones, and reported that hypothesis making is the baseline for debugging and that experience and familiarity with the code are the keys to generating correct hypotheses and choosing the strategy that fits them.

The strategy matches the shape of the defect. Upsun's guide names the alternatives in the order they usually apply: a debugger with conditional breakpoints and variable inspection, print statements for the cases a debugger cannot reach, divide and conquer for a codebase too large to read, backtracing from the symptom, binary search when the unknown is the position of the fault along a linear sequence of commits or inputs, and log analysis when the failure will not reproduce locally.

The unit under suspicion is isolated before you read the whole repository. Divide and conquer works because a module, a function or a class method is a testable division, and every division you rule out shrinks the space that remains. IBM describes the same tactic and notes that it works best when you narrow to a segment and then split that segment again.

The reproduction is a script another person can run. A reproduction that lives in your terminal history is a story, and the script in the repository is the artefact a colleague works from at midnight.

Bugs are clustered by symptom before the first fix. Upsun's guide groups related faults under one root cause and reports that fixing the shared cause clears several reports at once, which changes the order of the queue.

When The First Strategy Fails

You have named the reason the first strategy failed before choosing the second. The arxiv study found that contextual factors interact, that a combination of them usually drives the choice, and that developers replace one strategy with another as those factors emerge during the investigation.

The tool supports the second strategy as well as the first. Backward reasoning, which the arxiv paper identifies as a common approach, is awkward with a traditional debugger that cannot step backwards, and the paper notes that slicing techniques and omniscient debugging exist to close that gap. A toolchain bought for hypothesis testing and then asked to perform cause elimination has to carry both.

Print statements are temporary and marked. Upsun's guide recommends them and then warns that too many of them clutter the code; the marking is what makes the warning actionable.

The second pair of eyes is available. Rubber duck debugging appears in both Upsun's list and IBM's, and the mechanism is identical in each: explaining the code line by line forces the logic into the open, and the fault usually surfaces while you are giving the explanation.

The commit that introduced the fault is findable. Upsun's guide points at git bisect, which tests commits between a known good revision and the current one and isolates the change that broke the behaviour. That check needs a repository whose history builds and a test that runs in seconds, and both are properties of your setup that you can verify today.

On Defects In Production

Crash dumps are being collected and stored where the debugger can reach them. Microsoft Learn documents that Windows creates a crash dump when a bug check halts the machine, that the bug check code identifies the failure class, and that WinDbg and the other Windows debuggers analyse those files afterwards.

The production artefact contains enough symbol information to be readable. Build the release with symbols, split them from the shipped binary, and store them by build identifier. A dump without its symbols is a list of addresses.

Log analysis covers the systems you cannot attach to. Upsun's guide points at log tooling such as the ELK stack, Blackfire and Graylog for the cases where the failure cannot be reproduced on a developer machine, which is the normal condition for anything that appears only under real traffic.

Remote attach is permitted by the environment as well as by the tool. Firewalls, ephemeral compute and process permissions each veto it separately, and a debugger that cannot reach the target is a licence fee with a dashboard attached.

The observer effect is understood by everyone on the call. A sampler that captures and returns data gives you the trace the breakpoint destroyed, because a breakpoint halts threads and a halting debugger hides the scheduling interleaving that produced the fault.

Field data determines which production defect is worth the next hour. The Chrome DevTools documentation covers the Performance panel, Lighthouse running inside it, and monitoring of local and real-user Core Web Vitals with CPU throttling calibrated against real hardware, so the front-end queue is ordered by measurements taken from the traffic you already have. The same documentation describes DevTools for agents verifying responsive layouts, testing location-aware APIs and simulating slow CPU or network conditions, which reproduces the device and network class of defect inside the agent workflow.

At Ninety Days

The retention number has an owner and a ticket trail behind it.

Symbol coverage is measured as a percentage of production builds whose symbols are indexed, and the number is above 90.

The median time from report to first reproduction is recorded. That interval is what the tooling controls, and the fix time belongs to the engineer.

Preemptively logged incidents are counted separately from incidents that needed a reproduction script, and the ratio has moved in one direction since installation.

Every seat has been used in the last 21 days, or the licence is renegotiated at renewal.

The strategy mix in the last quarter is compared with the strategies the purchased tool supports. The arxiv paper reports a gap between learning a debugging strategy and applying it under a challenging problem context, and a tool that serves one strategy well narrows that gap only for the defects that match it.
